Freshmen Year Checklist
- Enroll in a college preparatory curriculum
- Fill out and submit your New Haven Promise Pledge to me (Ms. Rice) prior to November 30th.
- When possible, write papers, do projects, etc. about college
- Enter essay, speech contests, science fairs/contests for scholarships and awards
- Get involved in extracurricular activities
- Volunteer in your community and keep documentation of community service hours
- Take the time out to do a career inventory (via Naviance or Dept. of Jobs/Careers) to determine interests.
- Explore careers & job opportunities (based off of results)
- Study hard and do WELL in school- from this point on, your grades WILL count toward college and your permanent record
- Start to attend events on college campuses (plays, concerts, sporting events, activities related to interested major)
- Get to know your high school counselor and let your School Counselor get to know you and your goals, career aspirations, schools you are interested in/considering, etc. Your parents should also schedule to meet me at some point as well.
- Begin to create a collegiate portfolio with a resume (Naviance)
- Talk to your friends about what they plan to do after college. Talk to your parents and your friends' parents about what they did as well
- Consider college and university summer programs that are related to your interested major so that you can have a jumpstart on your future
